Cerebral Palsy (CP), what is CP, and how it affected Joe's life in a split second. On February 10th, 2008, Joseph Paul Philpott was born but he wasn’t breathing, the doctors managed to get him breathing again but the lack of oxygen permanently damaged his brain leaving him with a disability called Cerebral Palsy (CP) and this book is about his everyday life living with this disability.
Cerebral Palsy affects everyone different, some can do something another person can’t, such as a simple thing such as speaking. CP is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that affects a person's ability to control their muscles.
Cerebral Palsy affects Joe’s muscle and his mouth so he can’t sit still or speak words properly. It has shaped his life to the point that he doesn't know what “normal” is. Is Joe normal and everyone else is abnormal or is anyone so called “normal”? Living with this disability is just a part of Joe’s life, nothing more. Joe just embraces it and decides to not fight it because why would he? The doctors will just want to do surgery and pump him full of medication that makes him feel not himself all the time. So there’s no point, it’s with him forever and nothing will ever help, it’ll just make it worse. He just embrace it and lives with it.
This story is about what it’s like to live with CP, what obstacles Joe faces in everyday life and how he overcomes these challenges.
