In two weeks time, I will have the opportunity to go to MUN by myself without a worker. I am really excited about this and it will give me the chance to prove to myself that I can do whatever I put my mind to. This will be a huge step in my life and I will be gaining back some of the independence that my disability has taken away from me.
Cerebral Palsy has taken so much of my independence and this is a chance to get some of it back. Navigating MUN's huge campus will have its challenges by being in a wheelchair but I will do it while proving that I can do it myself.
Since the start of school, I have had many workers; some are amazing and others were just not for me. Those amazing workers will still work with me but I have decided when they are not available, to go by myself because I will know what to expect. Having new workers everyday is just too much on me and I cannot keep it up. I have nothing against them but it is too hard on me not knowing what to expect and trying to communicate with them to have them help me. It's just a lot and for that reason this is why I decided to go by myself.
I hope it will work out for me to go to university by myself. It’ll not only give me more independence, it’ll give me the satisfaction that I prove my disability is not my life. I’m sure nobody thought I would go to university alone, hell I never even dreamt of it but I am and I will because saying that I can’t is bullshit.
This was not an easy decision for me to make but it’s my call and nobody else’s. I tried to work with the workers but it was not a good fit and I just don’t have it in me to do it anymore.
Let’s do this and prove I don’t need anybody to help me
